What a classic. It almost became a bit boring towards the middle, but it picked back up again nicely. Very good movie

It is hard to make a great movie from a great classic novel (which should be read first before seeing the movie). This is not a "war story" as much as it is a "love story" set in a war setting. So, view it accordingly. They did a credible job of taking a literary classic and making a fine movie from it (with some relatively minor deviation from the novel). Slow and ponderous for a war story, but finely paced for a love story.

If you think this hard to get through you should read the book. Where I found this movie easy to site through and the acting excellent. But then you have never been to war "me thinks". The story line is like war. With only a moment of harror and a moment of tenderness the rest is just waiting for somthing to happen. The story is what happened to Hemmingway only it is transposed to WWI and it happened to him during the Spanish civel war. Consider this before you make a rash assesment.

I agree with those who call this one boring. It was an effort to watch. I can't understand how it gained plaudits from some.

I was told it was a classic must see. But it's a snorer don't see. Sorry for the brief critism but I'm upset that I sat through this waiting for something to happen.

Wolderful, still plays well after 70 0dd years.
If only they knew what was going to come in l939 - very well directed and filmed. Two top stars of the day could not have done better made for each other it seemed. AHL

This is an enjoyable film about two people who love each other and their struggle to find their way back to each other.

In the beginning the main guy (Frederick?) takes his best friend's girl (Catherine?) and therein lies the plot for the rest of the film. Even though the friend is his best friend (the italian captian/surgeon), he does everything he can to keep them separated probably because of stealing his girlfriend. Though fiendishly separated, love sickness eventually takes over and the main guy will do anything to get back to his girl, but is he too late? The backdrop is the nearing of the end of the war where everything is "supposed" to be happy.

At times this movie is slow and sometimes the plot get distracted. For the most part it is an enjoyable and entertaining movie.

This movie is like one big, boring, overly-long soap opera. Sad to see Cooper acting like a sniveling, whining wimp. The plot (from the Hemingway novel) rambles and gets nowhere. Starts out like it's going to be something, doesn't take long to show that it isn't.

One can't be disappointed in seeing Hemmingway put to screen in this fashion. Cooper is the best known but watching Helen Hayes portray Katherine is a wonderful treat that makes me appreciate her as incomparable actress and wishing I'd have an opportunity to see more of her films. I feel like Homer Simpson..."They could do that in 1932?"

I have a dvd of this film and therefore suggest getting the mpeg2 version if possible(the size prevents me from getting these large files..internet quota) because the B/W photography is beautiful. The director.frank borzage was a master of weaving sentimental overtones into wonderful love stories. Most people seem to prefer this version to the later ,Selznick color extravagant remake.
